Taking care of patients personal needs entails more than just combing their hair and bringing them ice water.

Patients who are not able to move about, or have limited mobility often need your help when it comes to transferring them to chairs and back to the bed. You need to know how successfully to do a transfer with the patient without dropping them or hurting yourself.
Patients who are very heavy often need to be transferred by using a transfer lift. You need to know how to use the transfer lift properly.
Many times a patient needs to be fed, and you must be able to feed your patients properly. Some patients need to have their food ground up while others only need assistance with cutting their meats.
You must also know how to make up a patients bed properly when they are still in the bed as well as when they are not in their bed.
There are many personal duties that you need to learn how to do if you go through a Certified Nursing Assistant training. The personal care is just part of your duties, which are very important, but you also need to learn how to recognize different signs that could mean a patient is having problems. The health problems can vary, from not feeling good to first symptoms of having a heart attack or stroke.
You need to be able to change bandages, help the patient in taking their medications, and a multiple of different functions. Most of your training is done on the job. You do need to take classroom training that will teach you how to recognize symptoms, different types of sores, and how to keep things sanitized.
